6 Self-Care Tips for Hosts at Unique Venues

The 2022 season has been one for the books, especially for those in the wedding industry! Read on for some self-care tips to help you reclaim your zen, feel your best during (and after) a whirlwind year, and ensure you're in top shape to finish the season strong.

  1. Don't skimp on sleep

Sufficient, quality sleep is essential to feeling your best and enabling your body and mind to recover after a busy, stressful season. Make sure your sleeping space is dark, cool (about 65°), and quiet - an eye mask can come in handy! For more time spent in restorative sleep stages, try finishing meals at least 3 hours before bedtime, avoid using blue-light emitting screened devices in bed, and go to sleep and wake up at consistent times. The consistency of your bed and wake times is even more important than sleep duration when it comes to optimal health, so do your best to stick with the same bed and wake time each day.

  1. Prioritize time in nature

It may be cooling off, but adequate natural light exposure during the daytime and time spent outdoors helps the body recuperate and reset by decreasing stress hormones, boosting mood, and building the immune system. Bonus points for brisk hikes to get the blood flowing! Recent scientific research tells us that as little as 10 minutes of time in a natural setting can help people feel happier and lessen the effects of both physical and mental stress. Spending more time outdoors is also linked to lower blood pressure and higher levels of concentration and creativity- all things that'll come in handy when you're running around, making sure all the i's are dotted and t's crossed, for those events!

  1. Hydration is key

Most folks know that water and hydration are imperative to looking and feeling good, yet estimated that 75% of the US population is chronically dehydrated. Staying hydrated allows your mind and body to function optimally by improving sleep quality and mood, lubricating joints, and boosting cognitive function and immunity. A great way of adding more hydration to your day? Have a glass of water as soon as you get up in the morning, and make it a part of your morning routine. Establishing good hydration habits (drinking 60+ oz of water per day) will put you on the fast track to feeling as fantastic and energetic as possible- and who doesn't want that?

  1. Schedule time with those who fill your cup

Spending time with friends and loved ones is a fantastic way of reducing stress and fostering good mental and physical health. Make sure you're using your off-season to your advantage by unplugging for a bit and connecting with those who are special to you - you'll be glad you did! Research indicates that people who maintain strong social relationships are more likely to live longer than those without those connections, even if they might not have the healthiest lifestyle.

  1. Practice mindfulness

There are lots of options here, and it all boils down to taking care of yourself in a way that feels good to you. Everyone is different! Some people enjoy a quick meditation; others prefer breathwork- as little as 1 minute of deep breathing a few times per day is shown to have beneficial effects on the nervous system. Our go-to is the 8 count breath exercise, which can be extremely beneficial if done before bed: breathe into the count of 8, and then out to the count of 8, for 8 minutes. Mindful eating is another option- it simply involves being mentally present and relaxed when cooking and eating.

  1. Get (and Stay) Organized

There's no arguing that being constantly stressed has a measurable deleterious effect on both mental and physical health, and keeping your living space and business clean and organized makes a world of difference. This goes for how you manage your business, as well- do you feel cool, calm, and centered when digging through your inbox, trying to locate a specific event detail? What about emailing a couple, reminding them to submit a payment or signed document to you? Or keeping track of where every lead is, in the event process?
